Ilston - a great place to live in and stay as children

My grandparents Arthur and Amy Dawson moved to Ilston after the 2nd World War to a bungalow built on land given to them by a local farmer that they had become friendly with. As children Margaret and I stayed there during holiday times and visited them at weekends when my mother worked in the Wilks family business in Swansea. It was a great place to play and my grandfather, a professional photographer took photos in and around the village such as this one of us not far from the road that leads down toi the village. We would play with the village children often in the village quarry (a place that we should not as children have visited). We often gathered wild strawberries for tea, for these grew in abundance (and still do) in the quarry. It was great fun exploring the quarry that 'though active in those days is now a nature reserve. Even these days you can find remnants of the old quarry buildings amidst the undergrowth along with one or two remnants of the hoppers and other machinery. Ilston is and was still a special place for Margaret and I and we sometimes visit the village when in the area.
