Bank holiday picnic at Llanrhidian, Gower Peninsula

The Dawson family was a very close family who regularly got together in our childhood years. Despite our father dying in the winter of '47, shortly before Margaret was born at the age of just 28, my mother had good support from her father, mother and particularly her sister Pat and brother-in-law Penry. MY grandfather served as a substitute father just as Margaret served as a substitute mother to our half sisters Elisabeth and Joanna after my mother's death at the early age of 50. The photo alongside shows Margaret carrying her cousin John (now in his mid 50s) with my mother and the family dog Shan lying down not far from our grandfather. The gathering at Llangennith was because our Uncle Penry was working on a cottage he had bought in the village. The whole family got together for a picnic later on this site later on. We had a very happy childhood and spent a lot of time exploring, playing and generally enjoying the company of others in different parts of Gower. It was a lovely place to grow up as children and we were very lucky to have such a loving extended family who supported my mother, Margaret and I, her brother, in our formative years.
