Mumbles - where we grew up as children

Mumbles was and still is a lovely place to live. Situated on the edge of the Gower Peninsula where Margaret had a caravan it was the place where both of us were born and attended school in our early years. Many of Margaret's friend still live in the area and shortly before her untimely death she told me that she was seriously considering moving back to the area. The village of Mumbles is situated about five miles from Swansea, once a quite prosperous town but in recent years it has fallen victim to the decline in shipping, the closure of coal mines and the reduction of steel manufacture. A lot of industries such as Ford Car Manufacturing have also moved away from the area, leaving the city with problems of urban decay. Having said that in the words of one friend of Margaret, they still have the beautiful Gower Peninsula, and that cannot be taken away. The name Mumbles is reputed to have come from the Viking word "mammals" which is associated with the female breasts. Apparently the Viking explorer Sweyne, who gave the name Sweyne's eye to Swansea, on sighting the two islands on Mumbles Head was heard to cry "mammals" for some reason. There can be few area in the country where children can go to school and then head off for a lovely beach with bucket and spade straight from school as we sometimes did as children.
